Hi,
For an author, there is nothing more exciting that completing a book or an article. There is no greater feeling of accomplishment that this one. And the major part of this activity is writing the first draft. The first draft is a major milestone towards finishing the book. Subsequently, its more of making changes to that draft and arriving at the final version. That’s what he probably means by "Writing the last page of the first draft is the most enjoyable moment in writing."
And to emphasis that there is no moment more joyful and glorious, he goes on to say that "It's one of the most enjoyable moments in life, period." Period here is used to denote the punctuation mark period or full stop. Its like saying “It's one of the most enjoyable moments in life, period (that’s it).”
With the first draft, you feel that you have achieved what you had set your eyes. WOW
Hope this helps.

Dear Amruth,
We keep thinking of many tasks that we want to do. Making a beginning is important and we keep postponing that beginning, not knowing how to start and where to start. Once we make the beginning the rest follows and the momentum picks up and somehow we achieve the end because of the drive that follows. The draft is the beginning in our venture to write the book, and once the last page is achieved it is almost half or more of the task done. The foundation is ready and other ideas and changes keep flowing to our mind spontaneously to build it up.
