Is Tirupur a Safe Place for Women? Seeking Advice on Relocating for a New HR Job

Dear Seniors,

I have been in the HR field for the past 1.4 years and currently reside in Chennai. I have received an offer in Tirupur for a HR generalist position with a good salary. If I decide to take this job, I will have to relocate to Tirupur. I am concerned about the safety of the city for females. Can you provide me with information on the character of the people in Tirupur? Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Tirupur is basically a nice place where you can find people working hard to make money, not in rupees but in dollars. It is neither a city nor a village, but it has been accorded CORPORATION STATUS recently by the TN GOVT. Owing to the recent downtrend in US dollars, there is a temporary setback in the business as a whole, but things will change in a couple of months as exporters are already looking forward to getting orders from European countries.

It is well connected to Erode and Coimbatore by train. So, if you can't find a suitable place to stay (like a working women's hostel or something similar), you can commute from Coimbatore, where you have good potential for your career growth as well. This is a very tough question to answer. It has grown out of proportion, so you will see all the problems of a corporation in the making - cost, congestion, hygiene, etc. Furthermore, the units are proprietor-driven, and I wonder what kind of recruitment or general function you will perform there. A city so dependent on one product...

Check, check, check before you make a decision.

With the way things are going, Coimbatore will become a hotspot just like it once was, thanks to the textile industry. In fact, you will find that the people are nice even though they may seem conservative; there is no wild partying, etc. Women are respected, especially those who come from the larger pattanams. It is truly a good place to be in the next few years.

Since IT is on a decline and the responsibilities you handle with corporate people may not be in sync with those of people in Tiruppur. But, I can assure you of one good thing: the culture prevailing in Tiruppur and Coimbatore. You will love the people as long as you are there.

Safety is not a concern; you will be 110% safe because the crime rate, when compared to Chennai, is only 10%. Traffic and supportive infrastructure are the two challenges Tiruppur is working on improving. However, if you have the opportunity to work with a famous brand, my suggestion is that you prove yourself and get easily noticed. This will definitely help your career growth.

Due to the dollar's decline, HR is currently experiencing its peak time to cut costs and implement the largest reforms the industry has not seen since independence.

Furthermore, it is a community-driven industry that always respects those who work hard (as mentioned in an article about the director of Royal Classic Group in Business World, July 2007).

All of this requires courage and how you approach it. Since I am from Erode, I deeply love my people and the prevailing culture. You will have peace of mind and will truly enjoy the differences.

It is a densely populated and polluted area. In the summer, there will be frequent power cuts and a lot of noise because all garment units will be running on generators. I too agree with Gokul. Tirupur is a textile city and one among the 8 corporations in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is an important trade center of India. Tirupur has gained universal recognition as the leading source of Hosiery, Knitted Garments, Casual Wear, and Sportswear. It is located in Coimbatore district, 50 km east of Coimbatore. Tirupur is the seventh-largest city in Tamil Nadu and is one of the fastest developing cities in the state. It has a wide range of factories which export all types of Knit fabrics and supply garments. The city is known for its hosiery exports and provides employment for about 600,000 people. It's safe to work there.
