Feeling Torn: Should I Work in HR Before Pursuing an MBA or Jump Straight into CAT Prep?

sunayna
Hello, I am studying SYBMS. Most of my friends are preparing for CAT and other exams for an MBA. But I've planned to wait for a year after TY, take a break from studies for about a year or so, work in HRM, and study for CAT alongside, and then give it in 2007 or 2008, depending on my work.

But I'm scared as I don't want to waste my 2 years working. I know it's not wasting actually, but I'm scared if I'm making the wrong choice because all the friends I know are giving CAT in 2006. My main worry is that will I get a job in a company in HR dept just with a BMS degree? And will I be able to continue my studies after this break? Please reply soon.

Hi Sunayna,

BMS is a good course, but are you planning to specialize in SY/TY? Frankly speaking, it is difficult to find a job in the field of HR without any specialization. You may end up with an Associate's post or something similar. If you are inclined towards HR as your career, I would suggest you take up CAT or equivalent tests after completing graduation. The ideal thing would be to find a job that allows you to focus on your CAT preparations. Good luck to you!!

I plan to work for 2 years, prepare for CAT, then leave my job to study MBA. What do you think about this? This way, I enhance my skills and have practical knowledge. The only thing I'm scared about is whether I will get a job after BMS.

In all honesty, I wouldn't mind a position as an associate. I mean, I am not expecting more than that anyway. An associate position would be perfect as it would give me experience and time to study, right?

I'm in SYBMS and I am confused about my further studies. I want to know what the various options available after BMS are and what the different types of courses in MBA are. Also, what is MMS? I am interested in managing/handling things, so please guide me on a suitable course for me.
