Hi,

I am new to HR. Can anyone help me with the meaning and differences between attrition, separation, and turnover? I am too confused. Please guide me.

Attrition

Attrition refers to a reduction in staff that is vacated through resignation, reassignment, transfer, retirement, or other means other than layoffs.

Separation

Any termination of employment is generally classifiable as a layoff, voluntary quit, or discharge.

Employee Turnover

Employee turnover is the ratio of the number of workers that have left in a given time period to the average number of workers.
