Transitioning from Recruitment to HR Generalist: What Should I Expect in Interviews?

Anil W
Dear HR Fraternity,
I have completed my Master's in Personnel Management from Pune University with 2+ years of [u]Recruitment experience in International as well as Domestic Market in IT Industry.
I am looking to switch over to role in Core HR Functions rather than just recruitment. Till date I have not got a chance to be in HR Generalist role and I wish to prepare for interviews. My current organization has deceived me by giving me exposure to recruitment function only whereas they promised me HR Generalist role when I was selected. So what kind of questions would ideally be asked to me? Would they just be Recruitment related or would they check my knowledge in Core HR Functions? (Since I need to brush up)
In case they are going to be on Core HR Functions, how should I update myself about it in order to clear the interviews successfully?
I look forward for guidance from all of you. :)
With Best Regards,
Anil.

Hello friend,

First of all, give yourself and the organization you are now working some time. It is quite possible that the present organization will give you an HR generalist role. Organizations work under business pressures and cannot fulfill the wishes of the people immediately. It always takes time. Do not conclude in a hurry that they have deceived you.

Please discuss this issue with your superior when you sit for a performance review. Express your career goals and preferences. Listen to his advice.

Are there other HR activities happening around? Can you participate in those as a part-time team member - let it be organizing events, conducting employee feedback sessions, explaining performance management systems, studying aspects of payroll, conducting employee surveys, etc.? These are the kinds of activities you can involve yourself in voluntarily. [I am only hoping that your company culture allows you to do the same]. Make yourself visible as an "HR PERSON."

I am hopeful that in the next 6 months to one year, you will be given an additional role for HR activities as well.

Persistence pays!!
