Do I Need a Revenue Stamp on My Rs 2500 Rent Receipt? Understanding the Limits

Karthik Jayaraman
Hi,

Please let me know whether I need to affix a revenue stamp on my rent receipt for Rs 2500 per month. Additionally, could you inform me of the maximum amount for which a revenue stamp is not required on a receipt?

Thank you.

Hi Karthik,

I think that you want to have a receipt for rent, which has to be submitted for IT or any other purpose. The matter should be on a ledger or folio paper, or otherwise on a white paper. After the completion of the matter, it should bear the revenue stamp; otherwise, it would be of no use.

You have to stick the revenue stamp on the right side corner of the page, and half of the signature should be on the stamp, with the remaining on the paper.

As for your value of the receipt, it is okay if it is Re. 1 per stamp.

Trusting that I have clarified well.

Hi Kartik,

Up to Rs. 500 is exempted to affix a revenue stamp on a rent receipt or any other expenses you incur in your day-to-day life. Beyond this amount, it is mandatory to affix the same.

Hello Friend,

Just an update on the amount:

"As per the Indian Stamp Act, certain receipts should have to be affixed with a stamp. Section 2(23) of the Indian Stamp Act, 1899, makes it mandatory to affix a stamp on any receipt as defined therein above Rs 5000. [Previously, it was Rs 500]"

Hi Nishikant,

You want to say that it is up to us whether we affix a stamp on receipts below Rs. 5000 or not.

Dear All,

We file bills against expense payments if the bill is provided. Kindly advise whether a stamp needs to be affixed on the bill or if a voucher is required.

Kindly revert.

Dear All,

Is it necessary to affix a stamp on the salary register for amounts over Rs. 5000? Actually, there is not enough space to affix a stamp. What should I do?

Dear Friends,

In view of the amendment of Schedule I to the Indian Stamp Act, 1899, the one-rupee stamp is required to be affixed on any receipt, the amount or value of which exceeds Rs 5,000. This amendment has come into effect from 10.09.04. The stamp is required to be affixed in respect of a receipt, which has been defined under Section 2(23) of the aforementioned Act.
