RMMS was founded in Mumbai in 1946 by some Congress leaders and since then, it has been affiliated with Congress (I).
During the peak years of the textiles business in Mumbai, RMMS was one of the major unions and had strong support. After 1984, all mills collapsed, and RMMS became just another sundry union in the Mumbai labor union circle. However, after the assassination of Dr. Datta Samant, the prominent union leader of Mumbai, it again became dominant and started capitalizing on big mill-evacuating and land-selling scandals across the Girangaum area.
It is currently headed by Mr. Sachin Ahir (MLA), the stepbrother of Mr. Arun Gawli. Its name surfaces whenever a big chunk of mill-land is attempted to be sold out.
