Struggling with Employee Indiscipline in Event Management: How Can We Encourage Better Behavior?

Bijal Shah
I am from Event Management Industry. It is observed that employees are very undisciplined in my organization. Even after sending emails addressing their behavior, little to no improvement is noticed. Undisciplined behavior includes:
- Frequently arriving late
- Misusing office property
- Engaging in joking and playing pranks with colleagues
Memos are regularly sent to all employees, but it seems that they are not taken seriously.
Please help me with strategies on how to make employees understand the importance of discipline.

You must define discipline. What is discipline in a manufacturing facility may not necessarily be a standard in software development. What is required in software need not necessarily be applicable in a call center. What is applicable in these places may not be applicable to event management.

You must have a broad idea about discipline. Specify what the issues are, and then we can respond.

Hi Bijal,

I request you to provide a specific behavioral pattern (maybe an incident). Are you facing collective or individual indiscipline? I shall revert back to you.

Be specific on issues of indiscipline. After hearing from you, I will give you the best solution to develop a working environment.

Hi Bijal,

I agree with Siva. We have to define the rules; then it becomes easy to manage the team members. In case you can contact me on my email, I will be able to give you some suggestions as I am presently working in the same industry. You can write to me at janavirane@gmail.com.

Hi Bijal,

I do agree with Siva and Janavi. I would also suggest that you mention the set of people working in your organization, along with the approximate age group. This information would make it easier to handle and find ways to address them. I believe that each age group requires different tactics to be effectively managed.

Dear Bijal,

This memo is not a corrective action, but rather a suggestion based on my experience. I recommend assigning leadership roles based on qualities rather than job titles. I suggest establishing leaders in each department and defining their responsibilities as follows:

1. Observing punctuality among employees.
2. Ensuring property safety.
3. Addressing instances of indiscipline.

By assigning leadership roles to those who display discipline, you can motivate others to improve and correct their behavior without encountering any issues.

Please consider implementing this approach.

Sai

Hi,

Late coming - up to what time? Is there any rule? Do they work late evenings and go late? If so, then you cannot make a big issue.

Misusing company's property... can you be specific?

Mobile computers, vehicles - what are the company's properties they misuse? In fact, if the company's property is misused, then you must dismiss them. But your definition of company's property must be understood correctly. Playing games on the computer may not be a misuse. When you say misuse, they must gain out of the use. Please elaborate.

I do not use the word indiscipline at all. There is nothing called indiscipline. The behavior is not desirable, and hence we need to correct these behaviors.

Do you have an attendance and leave policy? Does your HR manual/handbook talk about the discipline of the organization? If yes, please circulate them. Otherwise, come out with these policies...
