Understanding the National Social Security Number (NSSN) in the Provident Fund Act: Can Anyone Explain?

Can anybody help me with what the National Social Security Number (NSSN) is under the Provident Fund Act? I would be grateful to know more about this.

Employee Provident Fund Organization has launched a major project called “Re-Inventing EPF India' to provide world class service to all its clients. As part of this project a unique 14 digit identity number called Social Security Number (SSN) is allotted to every Provident Fund subscriber. Social Security Number is compulsory for every Provident Fund subscribers in the new system for providing all kind of services.



Why do I need it?

After Allotment of Social Security Number



§ You will have one unique number for life time including for your Pension after retirement.



§ You will get “Any Where Any Time Facility”, when all the offices of Employees Provident Fund Organization are eventually linked together electronically in a phased manner.



§ There will not be any necessity to transfer your Provident fund accumulations every time you change your employment, or move from one place to another.



§ Your Provident Fund account will be updated every month instead of the present yearly updating.



§ Eventually, when the necessary infrastructure is put in place, you can know your Provident Fund balance even over telephone (IVRS), through the internet or through specially set up interactive kiosks.

Can anyone tell me how do I cross-verify the NSSN?

I was working with a company in Hyderabad for the last 5 years. Some 3 years back, the EPO office people came and took photos and told us that soon we shall be receiving NSSN. However, after another year, they came back, and we went for photos again. This time, after verifying my details, they informed me that I was already registered when they came last time. Both the old registered individuals and new ones would get the NSSN numbers in a couple of months.

This incident occurred in February 2007.

Later, I changed my company, and my accounts department informed me to continue my previous PF account in the new company. After some delay, I was able to get a number starting with 120000xxxxxxxx, presumably the NSSN number as I was informed.

I provided this number to my new office, and they are crediting my PF to this account. When I inquired if this number is linked to my name, my current office colleagues mentioned that they are simply allocating my PF to the number I provided. It is my responsibility to confirm if that NSSN pertains to me or not.

How do I verify if this number belongs to me? Or if the PF is being credited to someone else?

This is in use in only some states. Karnataka is yet to implement this. Maharashtra is not settling withdrawals without this number/registration. I had applied for withdrawal when I changed jobs. The form that was sent for applying for the NSSN is lost in transit, and the company refuses to send another copy. Can someone help me in getting a second copy?

Hi,

I am working in a Chartered Accountant Firm and want to know if employees who are already allotted with a PF Account number but do not have a social security number. What do I have to do? Do I need to fill out a form for existing employees, or can only new employees get a social security number? Please help me out.

Hi Friends,

NSSN Systems have been stopped by the P.F. Department long ago. I personally inquired about this matter at the Regional P.F. Office in Barkatpura, Hyderabad. They informed me that they have discontinued accepting NSSN applications and issuing cards to employees.

I was working with Stainless India Ltd in Jodhpur. I forgot my account number. I have an NSSN issued by the EPF office in Jodhpur. Due to this, I am unable to search for my EPF account number.

I have a 14-digit National Social Security number now. Please tell me how I can access this account and check the balance on this account. Is it similar to the UAN number or a different process?
