PDCA: a control cycle, with control steps as shown...
P - Plan
D - Do
C - Check
A - Act
For maintaining and improving the current status, it is necessary to make a "Plan" first. Do operations according to the plan. Check their results. Take corrective actions wherever required.
Why?
- To achieve objectives rationally and effectively.
- To improve the control level.
- To stay away from the tendency of stagnation by developing a spirit of reconsideration.
HOW
1- Plan:
a) Determine the targets: Based on basic policy and evaluation of the current status. Clarify the targets. Targets should be indicated by numerical values.
b) Determine the method: Determine the method. Schedule and person(s) who carry out the plan.
2- Do:
a) Provide education and training: Notify the concerned member of the plan so that they can understand it. Educate & train them about the plan and the method to achieve the plan.
b) Carry out the plan: Carry out the operation in accordance with the plan.
3- Check:
a) Check the process: Check periodically and when required in the course of carrying out the plan. Make sure the degree of attainment of the targets and detect any irregularities.
b) Check the results: Check the operation performance for results and compare them with the target values. If the target has not been attained, investigate the causes.
"Not only to check the results but also to check and control the process of operations by using the results" as it is more important.
4- Act:
a) Take action: If a failure/large deviation from the target value is found as a result of checking, investigate the causes and eliminate the fundamental factors to prevent the failure recurrence.
b) Check the effect of the corrective action: Check if the desired effects are obtained as a result of the corrective action. Reflect the self-examined matters to the next plan to rotate the PDCA to a higher level.
