Promotion Rejected After Verbal Confirmation: Should I File a Grievance or Wait?

sechelem
I was informed by my manager two months ago that I had been promoted. Now, two months down the line, HR has communicated that the senior manager has rejected the promotion. What do I do now? Should I put in a grievance or wait until I hear from my boss? The fact of the matter is that I had been briefed before the actual written communication.

Hi,

Without a promotion letter in hand, it was inappropriate for your boss to tell you that you are promoted. I wonder why you did not think to ask for the letter. A promotion is usually accompanied by a salary hike.

How did you find out that you haven't been promoted? Did HR communicate this directly to you? If so, you can definitely approach your boss with your concerns. However, if this information is through the grapevine, I suggest you check with your boss for the promotion letter.

You should also try to find out the reason for not promoting you. This will help you work towards getting yourself ready for the promotion.

Dear Sechelem,

Sorry to hear about the plight you have been put into for no fault of yours. Never mind, haven't you heard of the slip between the cup and the lip? A promotion is confirmed only when in written form through a letter; only then can one be sure about it. Wonder why your boss conveyed it to you orally? :(

Thank you.

Hi,

I think that you should have firstly asked for a written confirmation regarding your promotion, which was communicated to you by your manager. But now, when the case has been rejected by your manager, I think that you should sit down sometime and try to gather the reasons for the rejection of your promotion. Try to overcome your areas of weaknesses and work as per the standards required so that you can attain further growth.
