How Do Other Companies Structure Designations for Software Professionals in Telecom?

Hi,

My company is into Telecom software & Hardware, and I was asked to frame the designation structures for our software professionals. Can anyone help me out by listing how the designation structure is followed in other companies?

In my present company, the designation is as follows:

1. Trainee - R&D
2. Asst. Engineer - R&D
3. Engineer - R&D
4. Sr. Engineer - R&D
5. Asst. Manager - R&D
6. Manager - R&D
7. Head R&D
8. VP - R&D

I think the progression from Trainee to Senior Engineer is perfectly fine if you are using R&D and Engineer interchangeably. Alternatively, you can start with the designation as Trainee Engineer.
