Transitioning to Core HR: Will My Current Role and MBA in HR Help Me Land a Job?

Hi,

I am working at Indiainfoline as a Branch Coordinator in a small city, handling all the administrative and some HR activities such as maintaining leave records, attendance, conducting exit interviews, and keeping track of the MIS for each employee. I am the only person responsible for back office work there.

Will this experience help me in getting a job in core HR since I have completed my MBA in HR? Should I continue there? Do brand names help in securing better opportunities?

After going through your post, it seems that you are involved in some of the generic HR activities. It's a good time for you to make a switch. It doesn't matter more whether you are working with a brand or not, but it depends on your skills and knowledge in the same field.

Moreover, I would like to know how much experience you have. Because based on your experience and skills, only then will you get a good offer.

Glad to know about you. In general, I am sure that as a Branch Coordinator, you are handling all the regular activities wherein you are involved in managing people and resources around you, which certainly helps you when you get into an HR job.

Also, as you have completed an MBA in HR, that would be an added advantage. But Khushboo, experience in a company definitely matters. Nowadays, stability is an important aspect of your career. The brand to a certain extent does make a difference, but as a fresher, that shouldn't be a big issue.

As Amit said, based on your experience and skills, a better decision can be made.

From your post, it's not clear what your experience is with the present organization. If it's less than a year or so, you can still continue with them. Secondly, this type of profile offers a greater opportunity to learn all aspects of HR.

If you can get yourself designated as personnel or HR executive, it will do wonders rather than being designated as a branch coordinator, in case you wish to pursue your career in HR or personnel.

The best way to grow is to start from the basics. Handle your tasks efficiently and keep yourself available for bigger challenges as and when they come your way. You also need to understand the total and actual function of HR. Based on that, select and master the domain that you are comfortable with. I hope this will help.

Welcome, Khusboo. It would be better if you continue it for at least one year, then look for a change.

Amit is right, Khushboo. You need to put in at least a year or two to get a nice opportunity. Don't get diverted now with brand names or, in that case, package. Patience will always help, and you will have better career prospects if your profile reflects stability. Best of luck for the same.

I have read all the posts before writing one to you. Well, as you are a fresher, I would prefer you to stay back and learn to be the best in all HR fields. You have good exposure, and your degree also supports this. As a fresher, it is very important for you to have a consistent learning curve in one company. It will help you to showcase your abilities in a better way. Trust me, your work will speak for you, not any brand.
