Confused About EPF SSN for PF Withdrawal? Seeking Guidance on Mysore Processing

Amith R Murthy
Dear Friends,

I want to know about the SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER of EPF. One of our employees joined us 6 months back, and now he wants to withdraw his PF from his previous company. They are asking for his SSN number now.

My query relating to this is, can we get this done in any place or not? When I checked with the local PF office in Mysore, they confirmed to me that they are yet to start processing these numbers in Mysore. Can we get this done in Mysore only? If yes, what is the process, and if not, what is the alternative?

Kindly help me out to get this issue resolved.

Dear Amit,

SSN (Social Security Number) is an exercise that is being carried out by most companies nowadays. This SSN is a unique identifier assigned to an individual to help them with a unique account number for a lifetime. An individual can work in numerous companies and does not need to produce a PF transfer form.

In your case, it is not compulsory to have an SSN. An employee can transfer their funds by using Form 13 and can utilize Forms 10c and 19 to access financial funds.

Thanks and regards,

Hi Jayendra,

Thanks for your reply. I would like to know if he has transferred his amount to his present account, can he later withdraw only the amount that he has transferred? I think he can't do this, so how can we withdraw the amount after getting it transferred to his present account? Kindly clarify.

Dear Amit,

Once he transfers his amount to your company PF account, he will not be able to withdraw his money. So, it is better if he submits his PF withdrawal forms (Form 10, 19 C) along with the SSN form to the previous employer. In such a case, he would be able to both get the PF withdrawal and SSN number from the previous employer.

Hi Suresh,

Thank you for your reply. The issue is that his previous employer is not willing to provide his SSN, and we are unable to obtain it. What steps can we take in this situation?

Dear Amit,

Once he gets his amount transferred, he can withdraw it by submitting Form 31 (in the form of a loan against his PF account).

In the absence of an SSN, no transactions are made by the PF Department. It has become mandatory to provide an SSN, although the exact date when this requirement came into force is not known.

It is not mandatory as of today as the process of obtaining an SSN is still ongoing. In any case, an SSN cannot prevent you from taking a loan from your PF account.

In Haryana, the PF office has stopped entertaining any request for fund withdrawal without an SSN. They have started sending the SSN form along with rejected forms. You may also come across this process sooner or later. There is no escape.

SSN is a good thing to have, but taking a loan on your account does not depend on whether you have it or not.

It is not optional, and even taking an advance/loan from your PF account is not possible without an SSN.

I also have this issue. I applied to transfer the PF to my PF account with my current employer. My application has come back asking for my SSN or an attached application form. I have applied for an SSN in the past with my current employer, but I don't have a copy of it. So, I am in a deadlock here. I can't apply for a new form for an SSN, and I can't get my old application form for an SSN.

Dear Sender,

You can operate with your SSN anywhere in India once it is allotted to you.

Dear Friends,

Thank you very much for your reply. Could you please inform me about the process if the PF office is not yet ready to accept the SSN application form, i.e., if they have not started the process of allotting the SSN? What would be the alternative for the employee to withdraw his PF????

Dear Friend,

Most of the Regional PF Offices are insisting on SSN forms. If any employee has not applied, it is suggested to submit the same with the concerned area office. Some of the offices provide numbered applications, while some provide a photocopy of the same without a number. When submitting applications for withdrawal or transfer of PF, if any employee has already applied, please mention the Application Number on the relevant forms for early action by the PF Authorities.

Dear Jayendra,

Is there any specific criteria, i.e., a time limit for an employee to withdraw some PF money?
