How Do We Create Effective Performance Appraisal Forms for Long-term Non-technical Staff?

Dear All,

I am Sujeet, working with an edible oil industry as an Asst. Manager HR. Till now, we had outsourced our labor and employees up to the level of supervisors. Now, we are trying to keep people on the rolls of the organization. So, we are required to develop some performance appraisal forms by keeping in mind the level of employees at that level.

They are 8th or 10th, 12th pass with no technical education, working with us for more than 10 years. Most of them are 30+ years old. Can anybody guide us on how to develop a performance appraisal form for these employees, keeping all points in mind?

Hi Sujeet,

Since these employees have been with the company on a temporary basis for so long without a structured appraisal process, the appraisal format needs to be simple. You can have something related to their major/key areas of performance, the measuring criteria for it, the target, and then finally the achievement. However, make sure that these major performance areas are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound (S.M.A.R.T).

Also, make sure that the communication to the employees regarding what they will be appraised on and the format to be followed is clear and enforced.

Dear Sengailingam,

You have stated that these employees have been with you for more than 10 years.

As per the Labor Act, if an employee has served in an organization for more than 240 days, he should be confirmed in the post without prejudice to anything.

When assessing their potential, the "SMART" criteria suggested will work excellently.

However, for the appraisal, you may create your own assessment unbiased to anyone.

I would like to suggest the following format:

1. Attendance to duty (Punctuality)
2. Leave taken during the period under review
3. Rising to the occasion (Whenever the organization is in need of assistance from the official, his contribution without minding his personal inconvenience)
4. Indebtedness (Loans applied through the organization)
5. Sharing knowledge with others
6. Obedience
7. Guidance to colleagues
8. Ability to learn the assigned work
9. Displaying potential in the assigned work
10. Ability to improve knowledge of the assigned work
11. You can also ask for his self-appraisal in brief (within 300 words)

Dear All,

I am Prachi, working in a software company. This company is eight years old with an employee strength of 200. I am asked to take care of the attendance part here. Since this company does not have any software for generating the salary at the end of the month, HR does it manually.

Can someone kindly forward me the format for the generation of the salary which is convenient and easy to process?

Hello Everyone,

I know there is a great deal of expertise here. Does a single format appraisal really work for multiple employees in different job classifications? In addition to some of the traditional items that are used to measure performance, I think it is important to measure performance for each of the job's essential functions and to validate the employee's ability to meet standards for the required competencies.

I would like to add one more point to Sengailingam. If it's an edible oil unit, then I think you have to consider the amount of wastage these guys have produced. I don't have a perfect idea about it, but maybe I think this could be one issue regarding his performance.
