Navigating the Tough Talk: How Do You Address Underperformance with a Senior Employee?

trisha
Hi,

Can anyone help me explain how to terminate a senior employee? How can we explain to him that he is not performing well?

Thank you.

Hi Trisha,

Just start counseling and let the employee know these are your weak areas. Also, inform the employee that failing to improve and meet the required goals may lead to management making a decision. This way, the employee will be aware and mentally prepared. If things do not change, then there is no other option but to terminate.

Call the employee for a discussion and begin by talking about various topics. During the conversation, ask the employee how HR can assist in their job. This will prompt the employee to share their thoughts. Then, inquire if the employee is facing any challenges at work or home. Subtly address their performance. Hopefully, this approach will be effective for you.

Hi Trisha,

Fahd has put in the points correctly. I want to add that you can do it with the performance appraisal report. The immediate superior of the personnel can be given this task. A counseling session would be appropriate for a senior personnel so as not to put him in a state of shock and shame. I hope other members would be giving you more valid and appropriate measures.
