Should We Penalize Security for Misplacing the Generator Room Key? Seeking Advice on Accountability

Hi, Recently, we encountered an incident wherein our security personnel handed over a key to the generator room to a third party to carry out service in the generator room. By oversight, the person who came for service took the key with them. When we attempted to switch on the generator, we realized that the key was missing. As a result, we had to break the lock.

In this case, the company incurred a cost of Rs. 500. Should we impose a penalty on the security personnel for this amount? It is important for them to acknowledge their mistake and ensure that it is not repeated.

Handling Security Breaches and Penalties

If the security function is outsourced, as is normally the case, deduct the amount from the service charges payable to them. In case it is a direct employee, deduct from the salary as a fine imposed on the employee. It is a permissible deduction from law as per the Payment of Wages Act 1936.
