Maternity Benefit Act: Does Medical Consultation Count as Pre and Postnatal Care?

kamlesh111
In the Maternity Benefit Act, there is a provision for the payment of a medical bonus of Rs. 3500/- if no prenatal and postnatal free care is provided. Please suggest whether medical consultation provided to the female employee will come under the purview of pre and postnatal care.

Understanding Section 8 of the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961

To have a better understanding of Section 8 of the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, kindly suggest and elaborate on what can come under the purview of pre and postnatal free care.

Thanks and regards.

Medical Consultation During Pregnancy

Medical consultation during pregnancy is one of the essential prenatal care services. It should be a periodic check-up and include a midwife's assistance.

Postnatal Care

Postnatal care is also required for both the woman and the baby. If you can provide these services, you are not required to pay a medical bonus of Rs 3500. This is a one-time payment, not a monthly payment. Consider the cost of sending a team of a doctor, nurse, and midwife to the employee's location at regular intervals compared to paying just Rs 3500 altogether.
