Earned Leave Eligibility for Probationers

Earned Leave (EL) will accrue only after 12 months of service with the establishment. The number of EL days to which an employee is entitled depends on the state Act. The Karnataka Act provides for one day of EL for every 20 days worked, and this accrual starts from the date of joining. If the probation period extends beyond 12 months, the employee should be given earned leave. This is because, for the entitlement of leaves (including Casual Leave or Sick Leave), the status of the employee—whether permanent, probationer, or temporary—does not matter. What matters is the number of days or months worked.
