Feeling Stuck in Accounting? Seeking Advice on Transitioning Back to HR After 7 Years

Dear HR Elites,

I have completed a B.Com in Accounts and an MBA in Hotel Management. However, I underwent industrial training in HR. Just after my post-graduation, I received a job offer in the Accounts Department, which I couldn't turn down. After 7 years in the Accounts Department, I have realized that this is not what I want to do. I want to switch my career back to the HR Department. It's better to be late than never.

How can I make the transition back?

What steps should I take to return to the HR Department? Please help.

Regards,
John Tungshang

Based on your educational profile and experience, consider starting with an HR generalist or operations role. Once you have a good understanding of the broad spectrum of HR activities, you can then focus on specific areas of interest for further exposure.

Begin cultivating an interest in gaining a deeper understanding of the HR field and acquiring the new skills necessary for professional growth.

Hi, 7 years of experience is a significant period. I hope you are well and are receiving a reasonable salary based on your extensive experience.

With your qualifications of an MBA in Hotel Management and a B.Com background, I recommend exploring opportunities within the Hospitality Industry, focusing primarily on payroll processing initially. This approach may lead to employers being more willing to offer competitive salaries considering your previous experience.

Upon entering the HR field, it would be beneficial to establish yourself in payroll first. As you progress, you can then explore transitioning into other areas over time.
