Is It Fair to Work 12-Hour Days Without Overtime Pay at a Remote University?

Hare.Krishna111
I am working in a Central University. Recently, the NAAC Committee is coming to the University for three days for grading. The University administration has asked all the staff and officers to be present from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM for the three days that the NAAC committee will be there. Despite working 12 hours each day, the University is not providing any overtime pay or compensatory leave to the staff. According to the rules, officers are not entitled to compensatory leave. The University was established recently in a remote location about 22-25 KM away from the city, and staff quarters have not been built yet.

Can I refuse to work from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM?

Please provide appropriate guidance and documents.

Hi, what is your job title, whether on a permanent role or on a temporary contract?

Overtime Pay and Facilities

For such a special extension of work hours, management should have provided overtime pay (not comp time off) and organized a cab facility as the university is located in a remote area.

Cooperation with University Arrangements

Leaving aside the legal aspects, if the arrangement (8:00 AM to 8:00 PM) is only for 3 days, why can't you cooperate with the university if it is feasible for you?

If you refuse, citing legal provisions, your superior may wait for opportunities to create trouble for you using their authority by mentioning various issues. Sometimes, we need to overlook minor matters at work.

It is not appropriate to guide someone while hiding your identity. If you have concerns, you can raise them at the nearest labor office or file a case if you hold a supervisory position. All staff members should provide their representation to NAAC and send a copy to everyone.
