Hi Ruchi,
I am a regular visitor of this forum and I found this forum truly informative. I want to ask, what is the role of an HR person in an IT/SW company? I would really appreciate it if somebody could elaborate on it.
Regards,
Ruchi
"Nothing is impossible because 'impossible' itself says 'I'm possible.'"
Role of an HR person remains the same in every industry, just like a salesperson.
A salesperson has to sell a product/solution for his company, while an HR person has to manage and improve the most critical resource of the company—people.
An IT/SW company is no different. You have people working, so you have to manage their payroll, their leave and attendance, travel (if any), conveyance claims, performance appraisal (may be project-wise appraisal), training and development, succession planning, employee separation management, and employee acquisition management as well.
What differentiates the IT/SW industry from the rest is its typical project orientation. So, every initiative taken in the company is project-oriented. HR initiatives are also more or less governed by that. This is more visible in training initiatives.
Another thing is attrition. Since attrition is very high, HR needs to cope with the recruitments it has to make (typically 20-50 persons in a month for a call center). This brings out another aspect of how to retain people. HR is expected to innovate so that people stay with the organization for a longer time.
Hope that answers your query.
One can write a book on the subject, so I am not elaborating much.
Cheers,
Saurabh
