New to Hospital HR: How Do I Manage Operations Without a Handover?

vibin chand
Dear Seniors, I am an HR professional, but I am new to hospital operations and did not receive any handover from the previous manager.

1) Please guide me on how to improve hospital operations.
2) What are the duties that I need to perform?
3) How can I effectively manage all activities under my responsibility?

Thank you for your assistance.

Hi, Please check the following:

Attendance records
Please check whether the attendance register is maintained properly.

Labour records
Please check whether labor records (as per your state requirements) are available. If not, start maintaining them.

Personal file
Please check if the personal file for each employee is being properly maintained. If not, start gathering data and maintaining employee-wise personal files.

Recruitment front
Please search for local nursing colleges in and around your hospital area. You may find trainees on a yearly basis who need to complete an internship as part of their course requirements.

Please assess employee morale and the employee attrition rate, and suggest employee welfare measures to your management.

There is more to be done, but prioritize and execute accordingly.

All the best!

Talk to management and other staff to find out what has been done in the past and what the current procedures are.

Presumably, staff are still being paid, taking leave, and statutory functions are being carried out. They don't happen by magic; there has to be a process in place already.

Understanding Organizational Differences

Secondly, we do not work for your organization, so we are not in a position to tell you what to do or what your duties are. Every organization is different, and more than likely, every hospital does things differently.

Taking Initiative in HR Management

You are going to have to use your initiative to deal with this problem. But my suggestion is to get on top of the basics first and keep the current hospital HR functions running. Once you are on top of that, then you can start to deal with other issues and explore what needs improving and how you can do it.

Designing HR Systems for Hospitals

If you are experienced enough in HR, you should design systems that are necessary for your hospital and implement them. Also, try to speak to the Chief Executive/Director of the hospital to understand their expectations.

Building Rapport with Other HR Professionals

If you are new, try to establish a good rapport with HR professionals from other hospitals. Discuss with them and collect their feedback. This will make it easier for you to implement necessary changes.

Please note that when starting anything new, there will be some initial challenges.
