I run a proprietary trading firm with 12 employees. Am I liable to deduct PF from the salary paid to staff?

Dear Colleague,

Criteria for PF Coverage

There are two main criteria to be fulfilled:

(a) For every establishment that is a factory engaged in any industry specified in Schedule I and in which [twenty] or more persons are employed (FACTORIES).

(b) For any other establishment employing [twenty] or more persons or class of such establishments which the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, specify in this behalf (FIRMS LIKE YOURS).

Hence, you need to check the preconditions and then proceed with coverage. If you do not meet the criteria, refrain from coverage. However, if you have employees already covered under PF who have joined you, you may need to opt for voluntary coverage to include these employees in PF as per the requirements. You can consult your PF Enforcement Officer for further clarity on this matter.
