Contract Workers and Professional Tax: Do They Really Need to Pay It?

morris-hasan
We have a manpower supply contract. Their laborers/workers are getting their wages on a monthly basis, calculated as Daily Wages X Total days worked.

Professional Tax for Contract Laborers

Here, I would like to get suggestions: Do the contract laborers/workers need to pay professional tax?

Please share any notifications or comments on the Professional Tax under labor acts.

Thanks,

Morris

Dear Colleague, the Tamil Nadu Panchayats Professional Tax Act itself will apply here, and there is no need to search for any notification. Every person who is doing a profession in a particular panchayat is bound to remit the Professional Tax in line with the slab fixed by the Local Body.

You may refer to the District Gazette for the relevant slabs applicable to your area. In this case, the contractor has to remit Professional Tax for their establishment, and the workers have to remit the Professional Tax to the Local Body. The contractor can facilitate by deducting and remitting it appropriately.
