Left Without Notice: Should I Accept a Service Letter Marked as Abandonment?

I didn't serve my notice period and left the company due to a personal issue. Recently, I approached them for a service letter, and they asked me to pay the recovery amount to provide it. I'm ready to pay, but they stated that the service letter's exit status would be marked as abandonment, and they are not willing to provide a relieving letter. Is it advisable to accept that service letter? Do companies like TCS accept service letters with an abandonment status?

Yours seems a classic case of "act in haste and repent at leisure." There can be absolutely no justification for leaving a company the way you seem to have done—personal or official or anything else. Walking in and out of jobs as one pleases is not like one can do in a movie theatre. I have seen many companies where such individuals are not even shortlisted for the interview process despite excellent calibre.

Rather than asking anyone in this forum or anywhere else, "Is it good to take that service letter," I suggest putting yourself in the HR person's position and consider how your reaction would be when a new joinee submits such a letter. Would you accept it? As an HR professional, wouldn't your first thought be: if this person has left a company this way earlier, he may as well do the same to this company?
