Navigating PF Death Claims: Is Her Family Eligible for EDLI and Pension Benefits?

lokesh-chowdary1
Dear All,

I have a small doubt about a death claim of PF. One of our employees recently passed away in June 2021. However, her last contribution was in December 2020 in PF. Due to her crossing the 15,000 ceiling salary, we did not deduct the PF amount from her salary from January 2021. Here, my doubt is whether her family members are eligible for EDLI and Pension. Should the reason be mentioned as "exit date Cessation short service" or "Death in service"? Please provide your valuable suggestions.

This is a great blunder made by the employer. The employee was a member of EPFO until December 2020, and due to an increase in her PF gross to more than Rs. 15,000, PF contributions have been stopped by the employer. Due to the employer's lack of knowledge, the family of the deceased employee will suffer. Once someone becomes a member of EPFO, that membership cannot be discontinued even if the employee's salary crosses the threshold limit of Rs. 15,000 per month.

Eligibility for EDLI and Pension

The family member is eligible for both EDLI and a pension. Please visit the concerned PF office with a request letter stating that the contribution was mistakenly stopped from January 1, 2021, and repay the pending contributions with penal interest and other charges to provide necessary support to the family members.

Let us hope for the best.
