Does Your Basic Salary Change with Different Month Lengths? Let's Discuss!

Vish0607
Hello All, I want to understand—will the basic salary change if an organization calculates it based on the number of days in the month? For instance, if an organization provides a 6000 basic salary in October (31 days), will it change for November and February?

Month: Nov
Basic Salary = (6000/31) * 30 = 5806.45

Month: Feb
Basic Salary = (6000/31) * 28 = 5419.35

Could you please help me understand? Thank you.

No, the basic salary or any other salary component will not change with the number of working days in a month. For working on all the days, inclusive of all fully paid leave, one is entitled to the full salary irrespective of whether it is February, March, April, or any other month. However, the actual per day salary could vary on a month-to-month basis depending on the number of working days. A standard month will have 26 working days.

Standard Work Days in a Month

Standard work days in a month are 26, 27, or 25 in the month of February. The basic salary or fixed salary per month should not change for the full month if the employee is present. Calculate the per day wage based on the total work days in a month and then calculate the salary as per day multiplied by the work days actually present. Weekly offs are to be excluded.

The dividing factor is the number of calendar days in the specific month. For example, for February, it would be 6000 / 28 x 28* = 6000. Any absences would be deducted from the last part.

For January, March, May, July, August, October, and December, it would be divided by a factor of 31. For April, June, September, and November, it would be divided by a factor of 30. February would be divided by 28 or 29, depending on the specific year.

Thank you.

Salary Calculation Based on Monthly Rate

When you fix the salary at a monthly rate, and if an employee works for the entire month including holidays, weekly offs, and authorized leave with wages/salary, the variation in the total number of calendar days in a given month is irrelevant for the salary calculation.

On the contrary, if there are certain days of unauthorized absence or leave without pay in a month, or encashment of earned leave on any day in the month, for the purpose of calculating on a pro-rata basis, such items to be paid or deducted only, the actual number of days in the particular month has to be taken into account.

In Oman, we have set all the basic salaries to 30 calendar days (month) so that it does not change, and all calculations are made based on this.
