Feeling Stuck: How to Handle Being Offered a Lower Role and Pay Than Promised?

Dear All, I am writing this to highlight my concerns below:

Profile Discrepancy

1. I was interviewed for the profile "Category Lead in the capacity of Assistant Manager." The word "Lead" clearly suggests a role involving "Team Management," which was also explicitly mentioned in the JD. However, after joining, I am being offered a profile equivalent to an associate/individual contributor role, which is one level below my previously held position.

Compensation Concerns

2. I have been deployed at a compensation that is less than my previous one, despite being offered an INR 1.1 lac/annum increment on my last compensation, which also includes a variable part. Although this will come into effect after three months of my probation period, I am concerned about some irrelevant business goals in the near future. I wonder if I will receive that increment if the company's goals are not met, and also my confirmation may get postponed.

Potential Loss from Leaving

3. If I choose to leave the organization at this stage, I will incur a monetary loss as I left my previous organization and rejected other relevant offers to join this organization. I am unsure how soon I will be able to join a new organization after this.

Career Growth Implications

4. If I choose to continue in my current profile in this organization, it will definitely hinder my career growth, as working at a lower level will not help me advance to a higher level in the future at any other organization.

I would request the organization to consider this a significant concern and come up with an appropriate solution to maintain its integrity and prove to be a great place to work, as I am going to suffer in both monetary and professional aspects if I choose any of the above options.

I would suggest first discussing your concern with your HoD/HR to get a clear idea of why this is happening. You'll be informed of the reasons behind the unexpected development, upon which you may decide on weighing options. I think you are on probation with certain terms of the notice period also. If and when you decide to quit, you may be pushed to the extreme.
