Is It Fair to Reset Employee Leave Balances After COVID-19 Lockdown? How to Address This Issue

Menaka HR
Dear Sir/Madam,

In our company, our GM is saying that all the balance leaves of employees after the lockdown become zero. We start from June for any leaves. Is it legally correct?

For example, employees who had 10 balance leave until March 20 and by the end of May, it becomes 14. However, the Department head is saying that these 14 balance leaves will not be carried forward, meaning it will be zero. Kindly suggest how I should convince the Department head for a positive response.

Corporate Decisions and Employee Rights

Corporate shame is at its peak as company representatives are resorting to one-sided decisions where employees have no say at all.

Practical Advice

Push for a partial leave abandonment as you all might have been working from home during this time. There were no leaves applied or availed by any employee except medical or urgency leave, maybe—I am presuming. Alternatively, suggest maintaining the old leave balance but do not credit fresh monthly leaves. If yours is not an effective workplace, you might have to comply with whatever your senior officials are mandating, as HRs typically do not go against them.

Action

Please stick to this company and comply with whatever they are saying. It is better not to avail any leaves at this time, as work and personal matters are being managed from home. You are just an employee compared to the might of a large corporation. At least you will save your employment and have a secure stream of monthly income.
