3 months paid maternity leave - if leave policy differs from every company or should they abide by the Maternity benefit Act 2017?

Hi, I have been working in a private sector for 3 years. I applied for 6 months maternity leave and HR is saying they can give only 3 months paid leave and rest will be loss of pay. Can you please advice if leave policy differs from every company or should they abide by the Maternity benefit Act 2017?
Thanks
