Forced Sabbatical Leave Without Notice: How Should Employees Respond?

Company forcefully put the employee on a sabbatical leave at the last moment and asked them to email stating that they are taking sabbatical leave of their own accord. No communication initiative was taken by HR. Kindly help me understand the situation better.
