Balancing Fair Pay: How to Handle Salaries for On-site vs. Remote Staff During COVID-19?

Rpatel
We are an IT/Embedded Systems company in Gujarat. Due to the lockdown, most of our employees are working from home. Since the government has eased the lockdown, we are allowing some local and office cleaning/production staff to resume work. Our issue is with cleaning/production staff. Right now, cleaning/production staff with owned vehicles are able to come, and employees who do not own private vehicles are not coming, but all of them are getting full salary. We don't have facilities to provide company transport for employees.

Need suggestions on handling fairness in employee compensation

Need suggestions on what can be done in this kind of scenario. There is a question of fairness because, right now, those that are actually working at the office are getting paid the same salary as those that are sitting at home. Are we allowed to have salary cuts, layoffs, or furlough?

Please advise.

Try to see whether some informal pick-up attempts can be planned by employees with vehicles, maintaining the necessary safety precautions of masks and gloves. Alternatively, consider hiring a vehicle for pick-up for a period of time. Keep in mind that Anand is not too big of a city.

Cutting salaries, wages, or implementing furlough is not the best way forward. Instead, think about implementing a shift system for workers.

Instead of salary cuts for those working from home, why don't you think of incentivizing those who come to work? Give them additional benefits. This is not the time to be calculative. Try to be employee-friendly.
