New to HR and Need Guidance: How Do I Set Up an HR Department Alone?

Arti_Chopra
Dear All,

I'm working in an IT company. Earlier, I was working in the Operations Department. Now, I've been promoted to HR. I'm new to this profession. Please help me on how I can set up the HR Department in this organization as there is no other HR person - I'm the only HR here.

Hi Arti,

Congratulations on your promotion. HR is a very interesting department, and it's a job that is least recognized. So, you need to accept this first. Start with understanding what exactly they want you to do, and what is the immediate requirement of the company. Is it hiring people, or having a policy in place, etc.? Get to the point and understand how the requirement is prioritized. Accordingly, you can start working.

I am in the same situation; I have been promoted as an executive HR. There was no HR in our company and no policy. With the help of this website, I have been able to introduce a lot of things: Leave records, employees' proper records, HR Manual, Skills inventory.

Dear Priyanka,

Thank you for cheering me up. Right now, I'm working on requirements. Please explain to me the source from where I can get the resume of the candidate. Some time back, we placed an ad in the newspaper but have not received any response from the candidates.

You can get resumes from the internet. Ask your boss to get registered to some job portals like 'monster', Naukri, etc. You can get thousands of resumes from them. Also, you can do some initial promotional activities and get people to send you their resumes to your email id. Advertising is, of course, one more way. Initially, you may find it difficult, but as you build your data bank, you will start to feel more and more comfortable. So all the best in your new venture.

Skills inventory is a computerized database of all the employees. It helps in replacement planning for the organization in the future. It contains all the detailed information of the employees, their skills, experience, technical knowledge, etc. 😛 8)

Arti,

It's common that you don't get walk-ins after advertising. Well, referrals work the best. Please have a word with all your current employees. Highlight the JD of the positions with its benefits and growth. Have you ever tried Campus recruitments? Have you done a survey of the Human capital pool in your city? Do you have any idea of the talent snatchers in your competition? As an HR professional, you should know all this. Please contact me with details of your location.
