International Work Experience: How Should I Handle My Employer Withholding My Salary?

International Work Experience and Leave Request

Worked internationally for 2 years for the same organization. On 1st July 2019, I requested my boss to visit India (against my paid vacation leave; I am eligible for 22 days leave after 11 months of work) due to my wife's sickness. He allowed and provided a ticket for 7th July to fly but stopped my June salary. When I asked for my salary, he mentioned that I would receive it upon returning to the workplace.

After a few days, when I contacted him to resume work, he said he would discuss with the director and then get back to me. Today, when I reached out to him again, he has not given me any positive response. I have not received my June salary or vacation salary.

Clarification on Vacation Leave and Salary Issues

It is not clear which country you are referring to (Middle East?). In the normal course, such vacation leaves are paid leaves with round-trip air tickets (as per the terms of employment). It is also not clear whether you have received round-trip air tickets or just one-way tickets.

Moreover, it is unclear why you called your boss instead of reporting back directly after your vacation. If you are unable to reach them over the phone, try reaching out through email. Draft a polite email and attempt to communicate that way. If you are unsuccessful through email, your only option may be to travel to your office (if you have a valid visa or apply for a tourist visa) and try to resolve the issue there.

Your organization is expected to follow the laws of the country. In the case of a dispute like this, you can challenge them in international courts, but this process will be time-consuming, costly for you, and there is no guarantee that the verdict will be in your favor.

I hope this helps clarify the situation for you.
