Navigating EPS After a Loved One's Passing: Who Receives the Pension and How Much?

Dear Friends & Seniors,

My unmarried brother, working in a Pvt Company, passed away on 19-02-2019. He is survived by his mother, brother & 2 sisters. Sisters are married.

My questions are:
1. Who is the eligible nominee to receive the monthly pension under EPS?
2. Will the nominee receive the previous EPS pension too (i.e., pension from the date of death to the current)?
3. What is the current pension the nominee will receive?

Kindly provide answers. Thank you.

In the case of an employee's death while in service, the eligible nominee to receive the monthly pension under the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS) would be the widow or widower of the deceased employee. If there is no spouse, then the pension can be granted to the nominee children. In this scenario, since your brother was unmarried and survived by his mother, brother, and two married sisters, the mother would be the eligible nominee to receive the monthly pension.

Regarding the previous EPS pension, the nominee would generally receive the pension from the date of the employee's death to the current date. The current pension amount the nominee will receive is calculated based on the years of service and the average monthly salary of the deceased employee. The EPS pension amount can vary depending on these factors.

To get detailed and accurate information specific to your brother's case, it is advisable to contact the Employee Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) office in Lucknow, India. They will be able to guide you through the process, assist in the documentation required, and provide the exact pension amount that the nominee is eligible to receive.
