Navigating Half-Day Work Schedules: When Can Employees Arrive or Leave?

sknikhat
Hi,

My company has a fixed work timing of 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM with a half-hour lunch break in between. If any employee wants to come in for half a day or leave halfway through the day, what time can they arrive or leave based on the working hours? Please suggest.

Hi,

He/she should report to the office after lunch hours if half a day leave is availed.

Thank you, V.M. Lakshminarayanan, for answering my query.

Lunch timing is from 1:00 - 1:30. If anyone wants to leave for half a day, should it be at 1:00 or 1:30?

Hi Nikhat,

Your total work hours are 8 hours excluding the lunch break. Roughly, you may have 4 hours for the calculation of a half-day leave. These policies are company-specific.

There are policies regarding the minimum work hours for a half-day and full-day leave that should be followed.

There is no policy as such. Even if I have to make one, kindly suggest based on industry standards.

For an 8.5-hour shift, including the lunch break, will 6 hours of work suffice to be considered a full day?

Understanding the concept of Spread Over of Daily Work precedes the formulation of any policy relating to any scale of leave less than a day, as well as permission for late attendance or early leaving. Spread over refers to the total time in a working day the employee is at the disposal of the employer. In other words, it is the time between the scheduled signing on and signing off by the employee, including the intervals for rest. For all practical purposes, a day of work comprises the entire duration of the shift and not just the actual hours the employee is required to work with chisel or pen.
