Is Registering Under the Labour Welfare Fund Act Mandatory for Our Maharashtra Unit?

Hr Tarle Global
I am working in a manufacturing unit in Maharashtra. Our organization was established in November 2018. We have 20 contract employees and 25 payroll employees. We have not yet registered under the Labour Welfare Fund Act, 1953. Is it compulsory to register under the scheme? Please elaborate briefly. Also, please suggest how to register.

Dear Friend,

The Maharashtra Labour Welfare Fund became effective in the year 1953 and is applicable to all companies in the state that have 5 or more persons employed.

Calculation:

Here, the contribution from an employee is Rs. 12, while the employer contributes Rs. 36. The total contribution amounts to Rs. 48.

Payable:

The contribution is to be made by 30th June and 31st December. The last date for submission is 15th July and 15th January, respectively.

Yes, it is compulsory to register. From this contribution, the government gives a stipend for spectacles, teeth, marriage, as per their rules. As per the proforma, you will have to provide employees with all details.

I need to know what benefits apply to any employee covered under LWF in the case of death. Is there any benefit for the employee's family after the employee's death?

This is the fund administered by the state governments through their respective Labour Departments for the welfare of contributing labor. The contributions, welfare schemes, and methodologies are stipulated in the Acts notified by the respective state governments. Since the schemes vary from state to state, you should visit the websites of the Labor Departments of the concerned states. A copy of the Maharashtra Act is attached to my previous post dated 16.5.19 above, which may provide you with general information on LWF management.
