Background Verification for New Hires: Do Employers Check All Past Jobs or Just the Last One?

ritu-karmakar
If an employee joined a new organization with 7+ years of experience and provided a relieving letter from their previous work experience with 4 companies, how would the Background Verification (BGV) process proceed from the employer's end? Would they conduct BGV for all organizations the employee worked for during the 7 years or only the last organization?

Thank you.

Dear ….,
It is purely your or company choice whether you want to validate all 7 years experience or not. But better if you validate all experience which will give more brief insight about his/her professional exposure.

Dear,

Greetings!!

You can check only the last company from where he/she is coming to your organization.

What basis are they using to only check the last company and not all companies?

Background Verification Procedures

Background verification procedures vary from company to company. You can request professional references (at least two) from candidates during the interview process. Once you have selected a candidate, contact these professional references to gather their thoughts on the candidate's suitability.

Professional references can include former bosses, former senior colleagues, etc., who can provide authentic information about the candidate's work experience. Keep a record of the questions you asked them and the responses you received.

Conducting Background Verification for Experienced Candidates

In terms of whether background verification should be conducted for candidates with 7+ years of experience, I believe it should be done as a standard procedure. This process will not only help evaluate the candidate's suitability but also allow you to assess their leadership abilities, supervisory skills, maturity, team skills, etc., especially if they are being considered for a higher or senior position.

I hope this answers your question.
