Feeling Unhappy After Job Change: Should I Ask My Old Employer to Take Me Back?

I am Vijay from Chennai with 6+ years of experience in the automotive industry. Recently, I made a job change to an OEM with a significant increase in salary, but I regret that decision. In my previous firm, I held a settled and comfortable position for 2.5 years. I informed them that due to personal reasons, I was resigning, and when leaving, I left on good terms with both my old manager and the management. I made it clear that my decision was not driven by money or position. Now, I feel that the choice I made was completely wrong as I am unhappy on a day-to-day basis, and it seems like I do not fit in here.

Should I approach my previous employer to take me back?

Personally and officially, my manager and I have a great rapport. Will they rehire me at the same pay grade? Will I appear weak if they rehire me after leaving? Money or happiness?

Dear Vijay, this matter entirely depends on your personal preferences. My opinion is just one perspective rather than the ideal or correct one. I couldn't guess why you feel "this is not a place for you." However, you know best why or what made you think this way. Without knowing the reasons driving you to this state of mind, it may not be appropriate to suggest any solutions.

However, as you mentioned, while quitting, you gave them the impression that you were not leaving for a significant salary increase but for personal reasons, and that your rapport with your line manager was cordial. Thus, you did belie their confidence in you, and it took a beating.

Now, you have to weigh the consequences of going back, which include: i) rebuilding your credentials among the former employers, ii) a possible sudden drop in your package, as you might be fixed in the fresher's grade, iii) sacrificing the "continuous service," which would impact your gratuity, pension, leave, etc., and iv) in case they won't take you back, there's no guarantee.

I can't rule out the positivity either; you might be welcomed wholeheartedly if they need you at any cost. Maybe you are offered a better package than before. Who knows?

Reconcile with the Situation

Have you considered reconciling with the situation and coming out on top despite all odds? Why not try to sail over all obstacles, turning unpleasant things into strengths and promises? Have you done a self-appraisal to understand why you feel this way here? Is there anything lacking in you? If yes, can't you improve?

A soul search might be necessary. The decision is yours; make a conscious decision. All the best for a bright future, friend.

I have a different thought here. Going back to a previous employer is not a good idea. I believe you are considering going back because you were comfortable with the job, responsibilities, and other aspects as well. However, accepting counteroffers is not advisable. Each company and each job hold different significance. You should reconsider why you joined this company and what challenges you are facing. I would suggest accepting the new job with full zeal, putting more effort into getting involved, and moving forward. The past is behind you; embrace the new job challenges and learn from them. If, after all, you do not find mental peace and monetary benefits, you can then decide whether to return to your previous employer or explore other job options.
