Can Retainer or direct contractors ask for payslips

Hello HR experts,
I worked in Retainer ship engagement for a company long back but they did not provide any payslips but provided TDS certificates. Now my future employer is asking for all previous employers documents including payslips. Can I ask my old employer payslips for whom I worked as direct contractor? If they cannot give would bank statement suffice?

You are stating you worked with a company on retainer ship,so it is nevertheless a contract.
A contractor would not be provided payslips by company. You need to show your bank statement of such credits as proof.
