Concerned About a Past Job Offer and Background Checks? Here's My Situation

Newbie18
Hi All,

I have a query. Some years back, I had an offer from a reputed MNC. However, I was not able to join them on the stipulated joining date due to a medical emergency, and then I didn't join them at all. Will this affect my background check? I remember that just before my joining, they had created my personnel records in the system. I am not sure how to handle this situation.

Impact of Not Joining on Background Check

It is not likely to affect your background check as you did not join them. Personal records of all employees selected to join are created; earlier, it was maintained in hard copy and now in soft copy. After the joining date is over, the records of all who did not join are consigned to old records. It is not likely to be referred back, but certain organizations specify that those who had applied against the previous advertisement need not apply. That being not the case, you need not entertain any apprehension on this count.

No, it should not affect your BGV on subsequent occasions.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Dear Amit,

The background status check by the ex-prospective employer will in no way affect your profile. However, do make it a point that if you are unable to report for joining on a given date, make it known to the employer well in advance (with some valid documents if needed) of your inability to do so. Furthermore, if you decide not to take up the job offer, inform the organization with a courteous and polite note, perhaps adding the reason why you refused the offer.

Remember, never burn bridges.

Dear Amit,

I agree with the opinions of Mr. KK and Mr. Nathrao. At the same time, it cannot be ruled out that the interviewer may recognize you. To tackle the situation, you should remain ready with a positive reply as to why you did not join on the last occasion even though you were considered for the post.

You have not done anything illegal, immoral, unethical, or incorrect; it was perfectly within your authority to join that company or not. By not joining that company, you exercised your right to choose your employment. This does not form part of your professional background.

Background verification happens on the professional background and sometimes on personal background. If your personal record is clean, you do not have to worry about anything and can enjoy your life.

Warm Regards,
