Training is an important function of HR. When it comes to placement function in a college, you will be more into supply side rather than representing the demand side. In my opinion it is just like a function that the Placement Agencies are doing. They will show case the potential candidates and bargain with others like Corporates and as such the function is more of marketing rather than HR. In recruitment, another important HR function, you are representing the employer who needs human resources and you will be in demand side. Depending upon the availability of skill and its elasticity, you will bargain with the candidates on the supply side. In a college, often the Placement Officer's duty is to find out a good buyer who is ready to hire your product, the product of the institution. If your college has a good reputation and the students have been given some add on courses apart from the curriculum of the University, you will focus on good employers who are ready to offer good salary to your students. On the other hand, if the students are below average you will be focusing on employers who are ready to hire this below average candidates at a low salary. In this process, you will also apply the demand and supply theory and the elasticity theories. In short, a placement officer represents a seller whereas an HR person represents a buyer!!
