Career Crossroads: Should I Pursue HR or Business Development After My MBA?

Raghu M D
Hi, I recently completed an MBA from London, UK, and I'm back in India now. I have 12 years of varied work experience: 3 years in technical assistance and BPO, and 7 years as an entrepreneur providing manpower to IT, non-IT, and ITES sectors. My last job was with a Japanese consultancy as a manager for the recruitment team, handling client relations and business development. I took a break for higher studies and am now looking for a job.

Career Path Decision: HR or Business Development?

Should I continue in HR or should I move into business development? Which option is better in the long run?

Thank you.

Depending on the opportunities available in the market, seize them. Get into the available area, and you can always achieve your goal. Do not sit idle. I have examples where a site engineer, during construction, transitioned to a business development manager, and an HR Manager eventually became the Plant Manager as part of career growth. Only believe, "I can win and achieve."

Thank you for your instant reply. But, should I put effort into finding a BDM job, or should I put effort into hunting a senior HR role? Which among these is a better pick?
Babu Alexander
Given a preference, if you are too creative, then opt for Business Development Manager. BDM requires a lot of creativeness and lateral thinking. However, as suggested earlier, first come, grab it, and from there, you should move on to your goal as BDM, based on your career appraisal. It is possible only in progressive professional management.
