Worried About Job History Gaps? Can My New Employer Discover My Recent Resignation?

I have 8 years of total IT experience. I recently (June 2017) switched my job, and as the days passed, I was feeling frustrated because of no work as I was on the bench. I decided enough was enough and started giving job interviews and got selected in one of the reputed companies. During the interview, I did not mention anything about my current employer. I told them about my previous employment (5 to be precise). I mentioned that my last employment was with company number 5 and did not inform them about my current employer. I told them that I got laid off and was searching for a job while learning new technologies. The company agreed to the gap and scheduled all the interviews, which I cleared and received the offer.

My current employment stands only for 7 months, and I have resigned. Actually, I have not absconded; I sent an email for immediate resignation, submitted my ID card to admin, and left the office.

Question 1: Since I have not mentioned my current employment anywhere in my resume or elsewhere, can my future company find out about this job from which I resigned abruptly?

Question 2: If a background check happens, will they only check the data and references that I have provided and nothing else?

Question 3: I resigned last week; can I join my new employer next week?

This is my first time resigning abruptly, so I am a bit nervous.

My request is not to consider moral aspects in your response. I understand that I did not leave ethically. Please let me know if any additional information is required.

If the company conducts a thorough background check and visits your previous company (No.4) prior to absconding, they will understand why you left that company, whether you were laid off. Were you really laid off, or did you leave for a job change? A gap of 7 months would also be checked. The scope of the verification check can vary from company to company. Company 5 could have given negative feedback on NASSCOM. Were you registered with NASSCOM? My point in asking so many questions is that one has to think of the consequences while or before doing anything. Joining a new job can be done anytime now that you have abandoned your previous company and not informed the new employer about it.

Below are the answers to the questions:

1. I left the job for a change.

2. For a 7-month gap, during interviews with the company, I told them that I was on the bench and was laid off due to no projects.

3. I did not register in NASSCOM; I did register in NSR. But I think the company from which I have absconded is not associated with NASSCOM or NSR because during joining, they did not ask me anything related to NASSCOM or NSR. If they were registered, they would have definitely asked me for my NASSCOM or NSR number. I have not faked anything; I have just omitted this current employment from my resume. Do they check the details which are provided by me, right?

Though you have not included your employment information in the new organization, your PF would reflect your 7 months of employment if your Aadhar is linked to your UAN. Once they enter your UAN/Aadhar in the PF employer portal, they will be able to view your last employment details.

Hi Keshav, thank you for the reply. If I do not show any PF or UAN from the absconded employment, then what should I do? I have not activated the UAN and PF provided by the current employer on the EPFO portal yet. I believe that once I activate the UAN, only then can Aadhaar be seeded and linked, which is something I need to do from my end. I won't mention anything about my previous UAN or PF; instead, I will ask my new employer to create a fresh one. I have decided to let go of the PF and UAN of my current employment, considering it has only been 7 months, so I am not losing much.

You will be leaving too much of an electronic trail in a wired world of PAN numbers and Aadhar. Will you be able to create another UAN?

Dear friend,

Things may or may not happen, but if it happens, you will be in a false position as you did not disclose the material facts related to previous employment to your employer. Always follow a fair path to avert future complications while dealing with your future. Please do not discuss this type of thing in general; who knows if your employer's HR is not following the forum.

Since you have an IT background, I don't need to tell you that things are now backward integrated. Now, tell me how much and how many times you will hide. Have you done anything that is not mentionable and hence you are under psychological pressure to hide? People are not fools; you are jeopardizing your career, so come clean because people will come to know sooner or later. As you mentioned above that you have resigned, then why hide the facts? You know better.
