Understanding Central Govt. Retirement Rules: When Exactly Do Employees Retire?

Dear Ashok, For all purposes, age is calculated and expressed on the basis of completed years only. This is also the case for any employment, whether in private or public sectors, regarding entry into and retirement from service. However, the difference between Central and State Government Services, concerning retirement, is that instead of the actual date of reaching retirement age, government employees are permitted to retire on the last working day of the month, regardless of the specific day they turn the retirement age.

For instance, if the retirement age is 60 years, a government servant born on 02-06-1958 and who joined the service in 1983 at the age of 25, would be reaching the age of 60 on 01-06-2018 but would be allowed to retire at the end of the month, specifically on 30-06-2018. If the same individual was born on 01-06-1958, they would have retired on 31-05-2018 because that is the actual date of their 60th birthday. Therefore, the date of birth, not the date of joining, determines the retirement date.

For example, another person born on the same date, 02-06-1958, who joined the service at 28 years old in 1986, would also retire on 31-05-2018. It is advisable to review the Government pension rules. Previously, government employees were retired on the exact date they turned the designated retirement age. However, for administrative convenience, this practice was later amended.
