Can Universities Legally Use Labor Contractors for Staff and Lecturers? Let's Discuss

maheshwari praveenkumar
Can university staff and lecturers be put under the muster of a labor contractor? Some institutes try to avoid paying wages fixed as per university norms.

University norms must be complied with even if the staff and lecturers are engaged through a contractor.

Dear Maheshwari, more inputs are needed for a university covered by the norms of various regulatory bodies such as UGC, AICTE, MCI, etc. Whether it is a State University, Private University, or a Deemed University?

Legal Position on University Staff Employment

That apart, the established legal position is that although education is an industry, a teacher is not a workman. Therefore, you cannot agitate against the issue of the engagement of teaching staff through contractors. If the conditions of their employment, such as salary, leave benefits, etc., are less than the norms fixed by the concerned regulatory authority, you have to make a complaint to such authority only.
