Dear Sujatha Rao,

There are two concepts in this. Dear Allowance shall be as per the fixation by Minimum Wages Act, which shall be released through Gazettes frequently. Or else you can discuss with the Management and fix a component, which can be 40% on the gross. The figure quoted suggested here is only exemplary and not a standard one. The intention while fixing a DA component in the salary should always be to meet inflation.

Dearness Allowance (DA) Calculation

For Dearness Allowance (DA) calculation, one needs to first understand the basics. It is important to specify the category of employees for which you are interested in knowing the DA calculation, as you have not mentioned it. However, for your understanding, I would like to inform you that DA can be calculated using several methods. I have encountered various DA schemes throughout my career on an All India basis. The calculation may be percentage-based or involve point neutralization of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) against a specific base year. The review of DA can be done on a monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual basis, and the base years vary across organizations. The CPI and DA review are dependent on the availability of CPI data.

For further clarification, feel free to contact me if you wish.

Dear Sujatha,

Based on our company, Basic, DA, and other allowances are calculated in two types. If any employee can get a salary greater than 2,77,000, it is calculated as Basic-55% of gross and DA-5% of Gross salary. For other employees, i.e., those below 2,77,000, it is calculated as BASIC-45% of Gross and DA-5% of gross.

Thank you.
