Eligibility for Pension: What Happens if an Employee Passes Away Shortly After Joining?

Abhiram
Dear Senior,

If an employee joined on 28.10.17 and passed away on 29.11.17 due to a heart attack, will the nominee be eligible for pension? We have not remitted the PF contributions for November 2017 for all employees. However, the UAN was created on the second day of his joining. This was his first job.
Srinath Sai Ram
Yes, please remit the November 2017 contribution. Also, please file EXIT Details: Date of Death, reason: Death while in Service. Later on, submit the PF Composite Death Claim Form together with all attachments.
Abhiram
Dear Srikanth ji,

I have one doubt. If an employee works only for one day, at that time, will the nominee receive the pension and EDLI amount?
Srinath Sai Ram
Dear Abhiram,

The criteria for claiming EPS is coverage under EPF Act and remittance of contributions based on Salary Earned. In this particular case, the Nominee will not get anything from EDLI.

EDLI benefit is paid based on the previous 30 months EDLI wages and the previous 12 months contribution to EPF - both by the Employee and the Employer.
