Domain Change - move from Software Engineering to any Management kind of roles?

Ajaykumar Patnaik
Hi Everyone,

Currently, I'm working as a Software Engineer in one of the MNC companies, having 2 years of experience on the Database side. I would like to transition from a database role to a management position. Can you please provide me with guidance on how to make this transition?

Thank you.

Hi Ajay Kumar Patnaik,

Firstly, why do you want to change after two years of working in software? Is software not giving you the learning/recognition desired? What is your general view on a management role? What do you think are your strong points to be considered in management?

I'm very interested in the management side. In the IT industry, there are many kinds of management roles like HR, PMO, TSC, Fulfillments, etc.

I have found similar roles in other industries as well, which means I have more opportunities to develop my career path.

Though you have not answered my query about the Software job's learning insights to you, still, my reply is to start grooming yourself for Management roles with qualities like in-depth analysis on any subject, patience, team handling, controlled aggression (not cutting loose unnecessarily, but for specific reasons), determination, and timely delivery, etc.

Believe me, Software also offers the recognition and growth desired. There is no hard and fast rule that you cannot transition into other Management roles later, after becoming more mature in your core.
